GLASER, DONALD ARTHUR
GLASER, DONALD ARTHUR (1926– ), U.S. physicist and Nobel laureate. Glaser was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and received his B.Sc. in physics from the Case Institute of Technology (1946) and his Ph.D. in physics and mathematics from the California Institute of Technology (1949). He joined the physics department of the University of Michigan (1949), becoming professor (1957) before moving to the University of California at Berkeley as professor of physics (1959) and of physics and neurobiology from 1989. Glaser's early research interests, for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize (1960), concerned the properties of high-energy particles. He designed the bubble chamber for tracking these particles as a method superior to the cloud chambers previously in use. Subsequently he worked on computational models of the human visual system supported by physical and psychological observations of visual perception. (Michael Denman (2nd ed.)
